College football added more bowl games to its postseason slate this year, and this year’s postseason will be even more attractive than usual. Six playoff spots are available in the four major conferences, and so far eight schools have clinched spots.
But there are still plenty of bowl games on the docket, and some of them are particularly interesting. Here’s a look at 10 of the best.
The Gildan New Mexico Bowl
Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico
Date: Dec. 26
TV: ESPN
Score: 2 p.m. ET
How do you make a college football game that already has history in the New Mexico Bowl (2000-09, 4-0) even better? Why, by bringing in an even better coach. Bobby Hauck, who’s set to become the 59th head coach of the Lobos, will bring his fast, aggressive offense to the state that has produced such greats as Timmy Chang, Kevin Tillman and running back Eno Benjamin. And if his teams are going to score fast and score early, it makes sense to do it against a spread team. The game will be played in a 13,000-seat stadium that will be loud. It should be fun.
The Independence Bowl
Location: Shreveport, Louisiana
Date: Dec. 27
TV: ESPN
Score: Noon ET
The Independence Bowl may have a weird name, but the selection committee had the right idea. The bowl needs to be a neutral site, with a location that’s close to Mississippi’s Gulf Coast and Arkansas’ home state. After all, these teams don’t play a regular-season game together, but they do have a long history of going head to head in postseason. The first meeting was in the Sugar Bowl, with Arkansas taking home a 37-7 win. The last meeting was in the Independence Bowl, with the Razorbacks winning 23-14. It’s always fun to see history repeated.
The Quick Lane Bowl
Location: Detroit, Michigan
Date: Dec. 27
TV: ESPN
Score: 3:30 p.m. ET
It’s all about the swagger. Swagger is something that the University of Pittsburgh will be bringing to the ac619d1d87
